Drawing done sitting on the ground: a market square in Pisa, a courtyard in Munich, and the sketchbook spreads that come out of them.
An hour spent drawing a building teaches more about it than an hour spent reading about one. These are drawn on location, on the ground, usually with a group sitting in a line across the same square.
In Pisa the subject was Piazza delle Vettovaglie, the arcaded market square — the arches taken first as one sweeping line, the windows and shutters filled in afterwards, a roofscape from an earlier page still open on the left. In Munich it was the courtyard of the Alter Hof: the oriel and the spire behind it in outline only, no shading, working out where the verticals actually land.
The sketchbook is also where the studio projects get thought about. Perspective, axonometric and elevation on facing pages, sometimes with a single block of colour laid over a drawing to test where the weight in a scheme should sit.
